A White Heron - Reading Response
In the story A White Heron by Sarah Orne, a girl named Sylvia struggles with feelings she has towards a majestic bird and a young man she barely met. “Sylvia whispered that this is was a beautiful place to live in, and she never should wish to go home”(pg.2) Sylvia is a young girl who lives on a farm surrounded by wilderness. Sylvia just adores animals and cares about them. But then she came across a young man, a hunter, who may be tricking her into thinking he has feelings for her just to use her to hunt down the majestic bird, the White Heron. I think Sylvia is going to fall for the man because ever since shes been on the farm her only friend has been an old cow that she lets roam around the woods so she can play hide and seek with it.
Ever since Sylvia met this man shes just been following him around. Even though Sylvia doesn't know the stranger they both talk, “Speak up and tell me what your name is, and whether you think I can spend the night at your house, and go out gunning early in the morning” (pg.2). This quote clearly explains that the man is a hunter and is hunting for something that has been seeking out, and even though Sylvia does not know the young man, she still brings him into the house. But the hunter kind of uses the family “I am very hungry indeed. You can give me some milk at any rate, that’s plain” (pg.3). The young man uses the family in a way to get what he wants. He just stays the night then the next morning, he is off to hunt what he has been looking for. I do think Sylvia will lead the hunter to the White Heron, and in result, the bird will be shot and killed and Sylvia will regret what she did.

The Strength of Women
Cheryl Strayed and Marie Curie struggled throughout their life. From physical pain to motivation, they kept their head up high and made it out of their struggles while inspiring others by their experience. Strayed hiked the Pacific Crest Trail all alone and Curie risked her life to study radioactivity. Both of these women put their lives out there and made something of themselves.
Cheryl Strayed and Marie Curie went through many injuries throughout their quest. For Marie Curie she researched and studied about radioactivity and soon found out that it was affecting her body. Cheryl Strayed decided to hike the PCT alone, and with that her body got torn apart by mother nature. The choices that Cheryl and Marie made lead to drastic situations. Marie Curie suffered from too much radiation and died from Leukemia Cancer. The PCT hike for Cheryl was tough as she suffered from exhaustion, deadly terrain and “Monster”, her overweight backpack.
The injuries that Cheryl suffered while she was on this hike was not as deadly as Marie’s. Although Marie Curie suffered from heaps of radiation sickness, Cheryl on the other hand had to deal with gashes, scrapes, deadly animals and mother natures terrain during her hike on the PCT. In the first steps on the journey of her hike, Cheryl had to undergo blistering feet and a blistering, raw, rough back because of her backpack. This is where she talks about her injuries. :
I plastered them in all the places my skin was bleeding or blistered or red with rash-on the tips of my toes and the backs of my heels, over my hip bones and across the front of my shoulders and lower back.(Strayed;67)
Later on, Cheryl falls down because of her bulky backpack “Monster”. :
When I crawled out from beneath my pack and assessed the damage, I saw that a gash in my shin was seeping copious blood, a knot the size of a fist already forming beneath the gash. (Strayed;67)
Cheryl Strayed had many struggles with her hike on the PCT, but, Marie Curie suffered a much worse pain than Cheryl Strayed. Marie Curie was a scientist. She researched and studied Radioactivity but began to get radiation poisoning and thats what caused her to suffer from Leukemia cancer. :
She must have know she suffered from radiation sickness
Marie also was suffering from cataracts developing on her eyes and suppurating skin till she could no longer hold a test tube. :
The source of cataracts on her eyes
The cracked and suppurating skin of her finger ends till she could no longer hold a test-tube or a pencil
Unlike Cheryl Strayed, Marie Curie died from studying radioactivity and while she knew the consequences of handling radioactivity, she still sacrificed her life.
Both Cheryl Strayed and Marie Curie went through life changing experiences but they both had motivation to keep them going. Cheryl Strayed met a man named Greg who pushed her to finish the PCT. Marie Curie motivated herself and with that she won two nobel prizes. These women inspired many people to go out and do what's best for them. Cheryl and Marie had accomplished their goals.
