The Big Break
The Big Break
It was the most painful memory; I still remember it to this day. I was nine years old, and I was out skateboarding with my friend, Jonathan, down to Dallas skatepark. It was breezy, the sun was shining and there was a calm blue sky. We cruised down a long steep hill and all I could hear was “Cla Clack, Cla Clack” as my wheels sped across the gaps in the concrete lines. My friend was ahead of me and I was just a few clicks behind him. My head faced straight, and as I was bombing down the hill my day had turned from nice and beautiful to a horrific nightmare. I made a small turn to the left to go with the hills flow with speed wobbles from the wheels violently shaking, but once I got straightened out my board , I was on the floor, both arms tucked under my chest and half of my tooth flung out in front of me as my jaws slammed into each other. I got up with my legs wobbling. I had so much adrenaline in me. I looked down to my arms and both of my arms are split in half. My right forearm was the worst, the white bone almost had pierced out of my skin. I called out to Jonathan in a teary voice “ey help!” He raced back knowing something was wrong. I sat down on a bench nearby the grass area. A man nearby ran over to me and asked me my parents phone number. I called my mom who was already on her way to pick me up.The tires screeched and I could hear the horn of the car as my mom sped through the freeway and streets. Once I got to the hospital, I was put in a wheelchair.I could barely hold myself up and I felt like my eyes were closing in on me.
They rushed me into the Hospital all I could see was the hospital doors open. They put me into the x-ray room, it was dark and cold. I had sat on a chair as they positioned my arms on two metal trays, soon enough the big metal machine hovered over my arm. The next thing I knew i'm on a bed as the doctors put a stretcher over my arm, and pull my arm to to pop and reposition my bone back into place. My eyes watered like a waterfall, but I held strong. The pain was excruciating and my heart raced in and out of my body. Now being able to stand and walk, I walked to the next room where they put the casts on. The cast was a heat pack on my arm, then it turned hard like a rock, that’s when the challenge started for six months with me being stuck with two broken arms.
The Animal
It was noon, and all I could remember was the plodding of someone's footsteps moving closer and closer to my bedroom. Then, there was a dilatory movement that shook me. I crack open one eye very slowly, enough to see who it was. It was a pitbull that somehow got in.. It was provoking as the pitbull stared at me with its delaying eyes. It just stood there and I could feel the dog watching me. His face was a consolation of his troubles he had and you can look into his eyes and tell something was wrong. I was taught to be wary of these types of animals but I did not show fear. The dog was inaudible but very gallant and defended itself when needed. He wasn't fighter but a lover.
Day 1: Cold Nights
Day 1: Cold Nights
The biggest struggle for me during this camping trip was trying to stay warm at night. When the sun dropped and the moon and stars rose, the cold air began to blow. I was asleep in my tent until the cold frosting air woke me up.The temperature dropped to about forty degrees, my tent was damped and all you can see outside was fog and within the distance were oak trees. As I layed in my tent I could hear the sorrow of other kids freezing in their sleeping bags. I was trying so hard to stay warm, I even got up to change my socks, shirt and underwear and that kept me warm again for a while so I can eventually fall back to sleep. I rolled up like a ball inside my sleeping bag and zipped up the zippers to the very last zip it could go, then I started breathing into my sleeping bag to try to attain the heat of my breath inside. Soon afterwards I fell asleep and woke up in the morning to a beautiful view of fog covering the mountains and lake and I soon realized I had figured out a way to survive the cold night. Something that I learned from this experience was how to stay warm.
